There are 3 kinds of fats (lipids) that circulate in our blood: triglyceride, good cholesterol, and bad cholesterol. Hyperlipidemia is a condition that occurs when blood levels of triglyceride or bad cholesterol (or both) are too high. Hyperlipidemia increases your risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke and other health problems.
While some people can control their triglyceride and cholesterol levels by watching what they eat and exercising regularly, many also require a medication – often for life. Research on how to control lipid levels in the blood continues, looking for new and better medications to treat this common condition.
