A peer-reviewed study published last month in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/journal\/esthag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environmental Science and Technology<\/a> presented evidence that hundreds of makeup products contain \u00ab\u00a0high\u00a0\u00bb levels of organic fluorine. This is an indicator that they also contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/chemical-substances\/other-chemical-substances-interest\/per-polyfluoroalkyl-substances.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)<\/a>, which are known more colloquially as \u00ab\u00a0forever chemicals.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS are called \u00ab\u00a0forever chemicals\u00a0\u00bb due to the fact that they do not naturally break down, and their accumulation within the human body is linked to a range of serious health problems such as cancer, hormone deficiencies and birth defects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0This is the first study to look at total fluorine or PFAS in cosmetics so we just didn&rsquo;t know what we were going to find. This is a product that people are spreading on their skin day after day, so there&rsquo;s really a potential for significant exposure,\u00a0\u00bb said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/thomas-bruton-39796657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tom Bruton<\/a>, one of the study&rsquo;s authors and a senior scientist with <a href=\"https:\/\/greensciencepolicy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Science Policy Institute<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waterproof mascara, foundations and liquid lipstick were the products found to most frequently contain high levels of PFAS.
