{"id":35548,"date":"2025-09-18T14:06:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T18:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/?p=35548"},"modified":"2025-12-09T12:55:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:55:58","slug":"mounjaro-shows-promise-for-kids-and-teens-with-type-2-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/fr\/mounjaro-shows-promise-for-kids-and-teens-with-type-2-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Mounjaro Shows Promise for Kids and Teens with Type 2 Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Mounjaro Shows Promise for Kids and Teens with Type 2 Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>Eli Lilly\u2019s diabetes drug <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mounjaro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mounjaro (tirzepatide)<\/a><\/strong> is moving closer to approval for children and teens after strong results from a new clinical trial. The phase 3 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/search?term=SURPASS-PEDS\" target=\"_blank\">SURPASS-PEDS study<\/a><\/strong> tested the drug in 99 patients ages 10 to 17 who struggled to control their blood sugar with common treatments like metformin and insulin.<\/p>\n<p>After 30 weeks, kids taking Mounjaro saw major improvements compared to those on a placebo. Their average <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/managing\/managing-blood-sugar\/a1c.html\" target=\"_blank\">A1C levels<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 a key blood sugar measure \u2014 dropped by 2.2%, while the placebo group only dropped by 0.05%. Almost 80% of Mounjaro patients reached an A1C of 6.5% or less, the threshold for diagnosing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/type-2\" target=\"_blank\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>, compared with only 28% of those on placebo.<\/p>\n<p>Mounjaro also helped with weight management. Patients on the 5 mg dose reduced their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyweight\/assessing\/bmi\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">body mass index (BMI)<\/a><\/strong> by 7.4%, while those on 10 mg reduced BMI by 11.2%. In contrast, the placebo group saw almost no change. These improvements lasted through a 52-week extension study.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tamara Hannon, lead investigator of the trial, explained that young people with type 2 diabetes often have a more aggressive form of the disease, and current first-line treatments often don\u2019t work well enough. She said the results are \u201ca promising opportunity to shift the long-term health trajectory\u201d for these patients.<\/p>\n<p>The safety profile of Mounjaro was consistent with similar diabetes drugs, though two patients on the 5 mg dose stopped treatment.<\/p>\n<p>If approved, Mounjaro would join other GLP-1 treatments already cleared for children, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoza.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Victoza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trulicity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trulicity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/bydureon.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bydureon<\/a><\/strong>, as well as Novo Nordisk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saxenda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saxenda<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wegovy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wegovy<\/a> for obesity.
