A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asthma.ca\/adults\/about\/triggers.php\">trigger<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is anything that activates your asthma symptoms. Triggers like stress can cause you to cough and wheeze more than usual. You might start to feel short of breath, or notice tightness or an uncomfortable pressure in your chest. As your condition deteriorates, it\u2019s easy to feel anxious or worried about how you\u2019ll manage your health. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stress can come from a variety of sources. Mounting bills to pay, a health scare in the family, working overtime, or getting caught up in the week-to-week struggle of juggling homework, soccer practice, flute lessons. Suddenly, you notice your asthma symptoms worsening, and they become yet another source of stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re locked in a vicious cycle. Stress leads to asthma symptoms, which lead to more stress. It can seem difficult\u2014indeed, impossible\u2014to try to get back to feeling normal and healthy again. And worse, if you\u2019re not careful, stress can cause you to get stuck in a downward spiral.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4088 size-medicenter-gallery-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HelpfulTipsAsthma1-480x300.jpg\" alt=\"Helping Tips Asthma\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The connection between asthma meds and anxiety. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people who suffer from chronic, persistent asthma are prescribed different types of medications for their condition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term controller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/asthma\/in-depth\/asthma-medications\/art-20045557\">medication<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is used as a preventative measure. You\u2019ll generally take it for a week or two, and after you are finished treatment, your mood will go back to normal. Your regular inhaled controller corticosteroid medication will not cause cause lasting mood changes.<\/p>\n<p>But if your controller medication isn\u2019t working as well as it should, you may find yourself requiring quick-relief treatment more often, causing you to veer from stress to symptoms to more stress. It might be time to talk to your doctor about the role of stress as an asthma trigger. If you have asthma, it\u2019s crucial to find a way to manage or reduce stress in order to make sure you don\u2019t get knocked down by your symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, you can target stress by taking time to do things that you enjoy. And when you feel like you\u2019re going to have an asthma attack, simple relaxation techniques can go a long way in alleviating frightening symptoms such as shortness of breath. They can even help you to avoid symptoms altogether. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following tips can help you to minimize the impact of stress in your life: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Changing your thoughts. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expecting the worst, dwelling on failure, or seeing the glass as half-empty\u2014all of these ways of thinking can cause unnecessary stress. Though learning to change your thought patterns is difficult, it can help you to regain control over your emotions and your stress levels. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Reduce or eliminate sources of stress.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s stressing you out? Money, problems in your marriage, depression, a jam-packed schedule? Some stressors, such as a busy schedule, can be lessened or eliminated. Others, such as money woes, depression, or relationship issues, can\u2019t be eliminated, at least not right away. Seeking professional help to target stressors beyond your control is one way to prioritize feeling better. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Avoid putting yourself in stressful situations. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, we inadvertently create more stress for ourselves. Not only can exercise keep you feeling healthy, it\u2019s a great way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/related-illnesses\/other-related-conditions\/stress\/physical-activity-reduces-st)\">relieve stress<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Prioritize sleep. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma is a chronic illness. Sleep is crucial to help your body cope with and recover from symptoms. If you struggle to sleep at night or find your symptoms interfere with you getting the rest you need, you will be left feeling low on energy. Stressors will affect you even more. Prioritizing sleep and developing <a href=\"https:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sleep-tools-tips\/healthy-sleep-tips\">healthy sleep habits<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as those listed below, can help you to feel your best. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only go to bed when you feel tired. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time every morning\u2014even on the weekends. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a nighttime routine that works for you and stick to it. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid reading, watching television, or eating in bed if you have trouble falling asleep.
