During an asthma attack, mucus is\u00a0release in your airways, which makes it even harder to breath. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or your child has asthma, here are the steps you need to take to both prevent and be prepared for an asthma attack: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4094 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma1.jpg\" alt=\"How To Managing Asthma\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Understand your asthma action plan. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asthma.ca\/adults\/control\/pdf\/AsthmaActionPlan_ENG.pdf\">asthma action plan<\/a>\u00a0(National Institutes of Health)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as an asthma treatment or care plan, is a guide to both preventing and coping with symptoms of asthma. It can help you to understand what you or your child need to do on a day-to-day basis, including medication to prevent symptoms. It will also offer a course of action should you or your child\u2019s symptoms worsen leading up to an asthma attack. An asthma action plan can help you to know when to call your doctor or seek emergency treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor can help you to develop this plan. It should include the following information: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medication you need to take on a daily basis to reduce inflammation in your airways.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medication you need to take and steps you should follow during an asthma attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also contain: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goals for your asthma treatment, including how to avoid triggers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructions on measuring your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/peak-expiratory-flow-rate\">peak expiratory flow<\/a> (PEF)(George Krucik, MD, Healthline.com)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using a peak flow meter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A list of your triggers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A list of symptoms that may be indicators of an impending asthma attack. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A daily journal which you can use to record information about your triggers and symptoms. This journal can help you and your doctor to manage your asthma in the best way possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you develop the plan with your doctor, ask questions about anything you don\u2019t understand. If the plan is for your child, make sure that other caregivers and teachers have read and understand the plan. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Get to know your symptoms.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of asthma vary according to the individual. Some people experience frequent attacks, while others may go months or even years without having an attack. Monitoring the symptoms you experience\u2014which might include tightness in the chest, feeling short of breath, wheezing, and coughing\u2014can help you to understand what is normal for you and what is not. Your asthma action plan should include guidelines for treating symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4095 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma2-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"Managing Asthma\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma2-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma2.jpg 436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Understand how to use a peak flow meter to determine peak flow. \u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A peak flow meter is a portable device that measures how fast air moves out of your lungs when you exhale as hard as you can. Keeping a record\u00a0of Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) measurements is an important part of your asthma treatment plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000043.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measuring your peak flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Neil K. Kaneshiro, MD, MHA, nlm.nih.gov)\u00a0can help you to identify when your asthma is worsening. If it is, you\u2019ll need to act right away in order to prevent a flare-up. For most people, this means taking quick-relief medication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child has asthma, peak flow measurements are even more crucial as it may be difficult for your child to describe his or her symptoms to you. You can use a peak flow meter to decide when to administer your child\u2019s rescue inhaler and thereby prevent his or her condition from worsening. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Know which medication to take when you\u2019re having an attack.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or your child has asthma, your doctor will prescribe both long-term controller <a href=\"http:\/\/getasthmahelp.org\/ltc-medications.aspx\">medication<\/a>\u00a0(National Institutes of Health) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and medication to provide relief during an acute flare-up of symptoms. It\u2019s incredibly important to know the difference\u2014long-term controller medication won\u2019t do much to minimize your symptoms in the event of a flare up. In some cases, long-term controller medication can actually worsen symptoms during an asthma attack. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your care plan should include a detailed outline of the medication(s) you need to take on a daily basis, versus acute relief medication. If you can\u2019t memorize the names of your medications, keep a list and description of your asthma medications on your person at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4096 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma3-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"Managing Asthma\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma3-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma3.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Learn to recognize the early warning signs of an attack. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially important for parents of children who have asthma. Your child may have difficulty identifying worsening\u00a0symptoms. He or she may simply panic. It\u2019s important for you to be able to recognize what is happening and act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing symptoms of asthma before they deteriorate can be the difference between feeling better within a matter of minutes and having to take a trip to the ER<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Early warning signs of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/asthma\/guide\/asthma-attack\">asthma attack<\/a>\u00a0(William Blahd, MD, Webmd.com) include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A drop in peak expiratory flow rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sensation of tightness in the chest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having difficulty performing day-to-day activities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people are in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asthma.ca\/adults\/about\/whatToDo.php\">yellow zone<\/a>\u00a0(Asthma society of Canada,\u00a0asthma.ca)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of their asthma action plan when they start to notice these symptoms. To avoid reaching the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asthma.ca\/adults\/about\/whatToDo.php\">red zone<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, (Asthma society of Canada,\u00a0asthma.ca) you will have to take your quick-relief medication or administer it to your child. In some cases, being in the yellow zone may also mean starting a course of oral steroids. But all this information should be outlined in your asthma action plan. If your symptoms continue to worsen even as you follow the steps outlined, you should contact your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier you identify and treat symptoms, the more likely you are to make a swift recovery. Medication is most effective when you take it early on in the course of symptom progression. But either way, you should keep in mind what to do if your symptoms continue to worsen even after you\u2019ve taken your medication and followed the steps outlined in your plan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have\u00a0an open dialogue with your doctor regarding your or your child\u2019s action plan. You should revisit the plan on a regular basis, as symptoms of asthma can change over time. Your doctor may need to prescribe additional medication or increase the\u00a0dosage if you or your child report lower peak flows. If you are using your quick-relief medication more than twice a week, it can be a sign that your controller medication isn\u2019t working as it should. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4097 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma4.jpeg\" alt=\"Managing Asthma\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma4.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HowToManageAsthma4-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b> Know what to do in an emergency. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, always be prepared in the case of an emergency. Whether you\u2019re the patient or the parent of a child who has asthma, you will need to know when to wait for symptoms to improve, when to call your doctor, and when to seek emergency medical treatment. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should seek emergency care right away: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling short of breath, even when you\u2019re at rest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty walking, speaking in complete sentences, or doing things you normally do <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing that occurs both when you inhale and exhale<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your symptoms persist, even after you use your relief inhaler \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A peak flow reading that\u2019s 50% or less than your personal best <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling exhausted or confused<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extremely pale skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning blue around the lips and fingernails <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skin around the ribs starts to look like it\u2019s being sucked in (often occurs in children) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unconsciousness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If any of these symptoms are experienced, chances are that you or your child are in the red zone of your care plan. For most children and adults who suffer from asthma, this means contacting a doctor or seeking emergency care as soon as possible.
