{"id":5424,"date":"2017-01-21T13:35:37","date_gmt":"2017-01-21T18:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/?p=5424"},"modified":"2018-08-09T14:06:11","modified_gmt":"2018-08-09T18:06:11","slug":"alzheimers-stages-symptoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/fr\/alzheimers-stages-symptoms\/","title":{"rendered":"The Stages of Alzheimer&rsquo;s and Their Symptoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching someone you love\u2014whether it&rsquo;s a parent, a spouse, or an old friend\u2014struggle with Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease is never easy. \u00a0Once this irreversible condition takes hold, it progressively worsens as time passes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of dementia, which can disrupt cognition, memory, and reasoning, are hallmarks of this disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can support your loved one by taking the time to understand the various stages of Alzheimer&rsquo;s and their symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/stages-progression-alzheimers#Overview1\">The Global Deterioration Scale (GDS)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a tool used by doctors who treat Alzheimer&rsquo;s and other forms of dementia. While no two individuals experience the same progression of the disease, these seven stages can serve as a general guide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being aware of the first warning signs of Alzheimer&rsquo;s can make it easier to notice changes in a loved one while the disease is still in its early stages\u2014and when treatment may help to slow down the worsening of symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing what to expect in terms of symptoms is one of the best ways to plan for a loved one&rsquo;s future care and treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage One: No Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this early phase, you may not be able to detect any outward symptoms. The disease doesn&rsquo;t cause any noticeable difficulties with daily living, and the individual is able to function normally and maintain his or her independence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reasoning and memory remain intact and in an evaluation, the individual shows no signs of dementia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this stage, a PET scan of the brain is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/alzheimers-disease-stages#1\">the only diagnostic tool<\/a> that can reveal Alzheimer&rsquo;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends, children, and loved ones might not notice any changes until stage two or three. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage One Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage Two: Very Mild Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5426 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/StagesOfAD_2-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Stages of Alzheimer's and Symptoms \" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/StagesOfAD_2-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/StagesOfAD_2-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/StagesOfAD_2.jpg 958w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In stage two, both doctors and loved ones may still not pick up on small changes in memory, cognition, and behavior. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of Alzheimer&rsquo;s at this stage are usually subtle, and may not interfere with the individual&rsquo;s ability to work, socialize, and function independently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, small changes, such as misplacing familiar items or forgetting words and names, are only noticeable to the individual. But these symptoms can also be part of the normal aging process. They don&rsquo;t always indicate Alzheimer&rsquo;s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage Two Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misplacing familiar objects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty finding words<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgetting some names<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Stage Three: Mild Cognitive Decline<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By stage three, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-slideshow\/stages-progression-alzheimers#5\">mild symptoms become apparent<\/a>, but an Alzheimer&rsquo;s diagnosis can still be difficult. Stage three symptoms may become more obvious and new symptoms\u2014such as difficulty completing complex, everyday tasks\u2014may appear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes can also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-slideshow\/stages-progression-alzheimers#6\">appear at this stage<\/a>. Some individuals with Alzheimer&rsquo;s might show symptoms of depression or appear to withdraw from their social circles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage Four Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgetting personal details<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty with complex tasks such as finances, cooking, shopping, or planning a dinner party<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgetting the month or the season<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stage Five: Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage, your loved one may need assistance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-slideshow\/stages-progression-alzheimers#6\">with a number of daily tasks<\/a>. They might forget where they are or what time it is, leading to confusion and disorientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your loved one might be unable to recall personal details, such as their phone number or address. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They might struggle to choose clothes appropriate for the time of year. Memory problems are magnified. The individual may lose awareness of their surroundings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With close friends and family, the individual may recognize faces but forget names, or mistake one person for someone else<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personality changes also set in by stage six and can include delusions, paranoia, suspicion, and mood swings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage, personal hygiene may become impossible. They may need help going to the bathroom.
