It destroys brain cells, breaking down neural connections and causing memory, behavior, and mental function to deteriorate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AD affects people in different ways. Sometimes, the disease progresses gradually, leaving major cognitive functions such as reasoning and memory intact for several years.\u00a0<\/span>In other cases, it comes on strong, swiftly robbing people of their reasoning and memory.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, AD will eventually become severe enough to interrupt daily activities and functioning. By the later stages, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\/life-expectancy#Overview1\">near-constant care may be a necessity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Who does it affect?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer.ca\/en\/About-dementia\/What-is-dementia\/Dementia-numbers\">Alzheimer&rsquo;s Society of Canada<\/a>, approximately 564,000 Canadians are living with dementia including Alzheimer&rsquo;s, the most common form of dementia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estimates suggest that within the next 15 years, approximately 937,000 Canadians will be living with dementia. Today, 1.1 million Canadians are affected by dementia, either directly or indirectly. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5453\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FAQAD_2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"FAQ Alzheimer disease\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FAQAD_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FAQAD_2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FAQAD_2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FAQAD_2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest risk factor for AD is age. Alzheimer&rsquo;s mostly affects adults over the age of 65. The older you are, the higher the risk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, people over the age of 85 have just under a 50% chance of developing the disease. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early-onset AD\u2014a much rarer condition\u2014affects middle-aged people in their 40s or 50s or early 60s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is early-onset Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early-onset AD usually strikes before the age of 65, making the impact all the more devastating, both for those diagnosed and for their family and friends. However, it&rsquo;s much rarer than late-onset AD. For example, out of the 564,000 Canadians affected by dementia, only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer.ca\/en\/About-dementia\/What-is-dementia\/Dementia-numbers\">16,000 are under the age of 65<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/news\/20160707\/early-onset-alzheimers-faq#1\">Early-onset AD has a genetic link<\/a>, which means that people with a strong family history of the disease are at an increased risk for early-onset AD. Though symptoms are often similar, people with early-onset AD tend to worsen more quickly than those with late-onset Alzheimer&rsquo;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the warning signs of AD? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some researchers believe that AD may be present up to two decades before symptoms appear. Alzheimer&rsquo;s often goes undiagnosed, and the average time between the first symptoms and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\/life-expectancy#Lifeexpectancy2\">diagnosis is 2.8 years<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On average, life expectancy is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\/life-expectancy#Overview1\">eight to ten years<\/a> after diagnosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But that&rsquo;s an average figure\u2014life expectancy may range from three years to as long as 20 years.\u00a0Death usually results from pneumonia, malnutrition, or general body wasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How is it treated? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cure for AD. Treatment tends to focus on temporarily slowing the progression of the disease\u00a0and improving quality of life. Medication can help with memory and cognition for a period of time, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brightfocus.org\/alzheimers\/article\/healthy-living-alzheimers-disease-0\">lifestyle interventions <\/a>such as occupational therapy, exercise, nutrition, and alternative medicine may also be used to lessen the effects of the disease. Social support from family and friends is also helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Can treatment add time? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\/life-expectancy#Treatment3\"> cannot stop the progression of AD<\/a>. It is still unclear whether treatment can increase longevity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Alzheimer&rsquo;s will inevitably progress, taking its toll on both mind and body. It&rsquo;s a good idea to discuss your treatment with your doctor. Alzheimer&rsquo;s research is constantly growing, and new treatments and medications are in development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What factors affect life expectancy? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\/life-expectancy#Riskfactors4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has identified a few factors that influence life expectancy after an AD diagnosis. They include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Sex. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study from 2004 indicated that following a first diagnosis, men lived 4.2 years, on average.
