P<\/span>eople with AD may eventually become unresponsive to their environments, and struggle to speak or perform other basic tasks, like drinking or washing themselves. In the late stages, they may <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/alzheimers-disease\/guide\/treatment\/\">require near-constant care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/medicines-to-treat-dementi\">Treatmen<\/a>t may be used to delay declines in memory, communication, and thinking abilities, at least for a period of time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to find out more about different types of treatments, including medications, healthy lifestyle tips, alternative therapies, and the care of someone with Alzheimer&rsquo;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Choosing the Right Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor can help you to select the form(s) of treatment that works best for you. Together, you should consider: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your age, health status, family, and medical history<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stage of the disease and severity of symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your lifestyle, and whether medication and therapy fit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your personal preferences, as well as those of your family members and caregivers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Medication <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication is often used to help improve quality of life for the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/alzheimers-disease\/guide\/treatment\/\"> first several years after diagnosis<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Though the drugs available to treat AD are not capable of curing the disease, they may help slow the development of symptoms such as memory decline and changes in motor skills, communication, and thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5468\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_2-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"Alzheimer Treatment\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_2-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_2.jpg 408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer.ca\/en\/About-dementia\/Treatment-options\/Drugs-approved-for-Alzheimers-disease\"> the drugs approved<\/a> to treat symptoms of early- to middle-stage Alzheimer&rsquo;s include<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donepezil (Aricept\u00ae, Aricept\u00ae RDT)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rivastigmine (Exelon\u2122, Novo-Rivastigmine, Teva-Rivastigmine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galantamine Hydrobromide (Reminyl\u2122 ER)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications are part of a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors. They help treat AD by blocking the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in memory and cognition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects vary from person to person\u00a0and may include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/medicines-to-treat-dementia\">gastrointestinal symptoms<\/a> such as nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite,\u00a0and more frequent bowel movements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Typically, these medications are helpful for 6 &#8211; 12 months, and in some cases longer. With time, the brain slows\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/medicines-to-treat-dementia\">production of acetylcholine<\/a> and cholinesterase inhibitors lose their effectiveness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moderate to severe Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease may be treated with the following medication: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donepezil (Aricept\u00ae, Aricept\u00ae RDT)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memantine Hydrochoride (Ebixa\u00ae)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5469\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_3-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Alzheimer's Treatment\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_3-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_3.jpg 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memantine is an N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist. It&rsquo;s most likely to be used in severe or late-stage cases of AD. When taken, memantine blocks the activity\u00a0of a\u00a0neurotransmitter called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/medicines-to-treat-dementia\">glutamate<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though glutamate is necessary for brain functions such as learning and memory, when too much glutamate is present\u2014such as in the Alzheimer&rsquo;s affected brain\u2014it can speed up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/alzheimers-disease\/guide\/treatment\/\">cell damage\u00a0and death<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/medicines-to-treat-dementia\">Side effects of memantine<\/a> include constipation, headaches, confusion, and dizziness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other types of medication, such as antipsychotics, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants may also be prescribed to treat the emotional and behavioural side effects of Alzheimer&rsquo;s. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Healthy Living<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diseases such as stroke, diabetes and heart disease can have an effect on memory decline. \u00a0Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition, physical activity and lowering stress levels. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests\u00a0that &lsquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brightfocus.org\/alzheimers\/diet-and-exercise\">exercising&rsquo;\u00a0your brain<\/a>\u00a0can help to keep it healthy. Some activities that can help to stimulate\u00a0your brain\u00a0include reading, writing, gardening, playing a musical instrument, learning a language, and playing games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social activities such as visiting museums and going to movies, concerts or plays may also be helpful. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research has shown that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/alzheimers-disease-therapy-options#1\">art and music therapy<\/a>\u00a0can boost mood, and improve behaviour and daily functioning among individuals with Alzheimer&rsquo;s. Art and music may help trigger memories and preserve a sense of connection to the outside world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Alternative\u00a0Therapies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people choose to explore forms of therapy and treatment beyond medication and healthy living. But in general, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/alzheimers-disease-therapy-options#1\">research into alternative therapies <\/a>and whether they can help treat Alzheimer&rsquo;s is limited<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some common forms of alternative treatment include: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vitamin E.<b><\/b><b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This vitamin, which has antioxidant properties, was once believed to protect nerve cells from deteriorating. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/alzheimers-disease-therapy-options#1\">research has turned up little evidence<\/a> as to its effectiveness in treating Alzheimer&rsquo;s, and as a result, many doctors no longer recommend it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Supplements. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people affected with AD choose to try supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, huperzine A, and others. But there&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/alzheimers\/guide\/alzheimers-disease-therapy-options#1\">not enough research<\/a> to indicate whether they help, and supplements aren&rsquo;t regulated the way that drugs are\u2014just because you can buy them without a prescription doesn&rsquo;t mean they&rsquo;re <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer.ca\/en\/About-dementia\/Treatment-options#alternative-therapies\">100% safe<\/a>. Some supplements may alter the effectiveness of certain\u00a0medications. Speak to a doctor before you start taking one.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).\u00a0At one time, it was believed that hormone replacement therapy in women after menopause could help to prevent Alzheimer&rsquo;s, but more recent research suggests this is not the case. In fact, HRT may have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer.ca\/en\/About-dementia\/Treatment-options#alternative-therapies\">opposite effect<\/a> and may also increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and breast cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Alzheimer&rsquo;s Care<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5470\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADTreatment_4.jpeg\" alt=\"Alzheimer Treatment\" width=\"266\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Alzheimer&rsquo;s takes hold, safety becomes a concern. People with the disease may behave in a variety of ways, some of which are potentially dangerous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, they might forget whether they&rsquo;ve taken their medication, or fail to recognize dangerous products and tools in the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They might wander or forget where they are or how they got there. Disorientation, impaired judgement, impaired senses, confusion, suspicion, and paranoia can make day-to-day life a challenge to people\u00a0with AD and their caregivers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to Alzheimer&rsquo;s, home-based care is incredibly important\u2014it can help to improve both quality of life and symptoms. However, family members may find it very difficult to care for a loved one with AD. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re a caretaker, you should take the time to learn about the disease and how you can help with symptoms.
