But in the later stages of COPD, you may not be able to take care of yourself and are at increased risk of other illnesses. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Signs You&rsquo;re Having an Exacerbation <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From time to time, people affected by COPD may experience a flare-up of severe symptoms, also known as an exacerbation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, these periods of severe symptoms are triggered by viruses or bacterial infections\u2014for example, contracting a cold or flu. Spending time in a smoggy, smoky, or polluted environment can also affect COPD symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5568\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/COPDSigns_4-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"COPD Signs and Symptoms\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/COPDSigns_4-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/COPDSigns_4.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been diagnosed with COPD, it&rsquo;s important to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/10-signs-copd-exacerbation\">understand the warning signs of an exacerbation<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exacerbations can be serious, and ignoring the symptoms of one may lead to hospitalization and in severe cases, can be life-threatening. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should contact a doctor or go to the hospital right away if you are having an exacerbation. If you have medications for your flare-ups at home, your doctor can\u00a0help you to know when to use them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your doctor can also tell you if you need to access emergency medical services for faster treatment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You should seek immediate medical care if you or a loved one are experiencing any of the following:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><\/b><b>You cannot speak. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can&rsquo;t seem to get your words out. During an exacerbation, you might have to use hand gestures to explain what&rsquo;s wrong to someone. This is a sign that your exacerbation is serious and that you are in danger. \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Your breath is noisy or irregular.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can&rsquo;t seem to breathe without wheezing or gasping\u2014signs that mucus is blocking your airways. Rattling and gurgling may be caused by fluid in the lungs. Your breathing becomes irregular,\u00a0and you feel like you are using your chest muscles to breathe rather than your diaphragm.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Your cough has worsened. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be more frequent or severe than before. It might be dry, or you might cough up colored phlegm. When you lie down, it gets worse.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><\/b><b><\/b><b>You feel dizzy, confused, or disoriented. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not getting enough oxygen can lead to these symptoms.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Changes in nail or skin\u00a0color.<\/strong>\u00a0B<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lue- or gray-tinted fingernails, or a bluish tint around your lips, or a yellow or grey tone to your skin may indicate a lack of oxygen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>You get headaches in the morning.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your head throbs when you wake up in the morning, because\u00a0carbon dioxide has built up in your brain.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>You struggle to sleep and\/or eat.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can&rsquo;t seem to fall asleep, and you don&rsquo;t feel like eating.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><\/b><b>Swollen legs, ankles, or stomach pain. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms are related to problems with your heart and lungs.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Chest Pain. <\/b>Seek immediate assistance if you have chest pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you think you, or someone you love, has COPD, take this <a href=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/questionnaire\/asthma-copd\/\">COPD questionnaire<\/a> and see your doctor as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information in this article should not be taken as professional medical advice.
