For some migraine sufferers, flashes of light that move across their field of vision are clues that a migraine is on its way. For others, the <\/span>first hints are unusual food cravings. <\/span><\/p>\n

Around three out of five migraine sufferers experience warning signs before the onset of head pain typically associated with migraines. Once a headache strikes, it can send them to bed for hours. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to Statistics Canada, <\/span>eight percent of Canadians<\/span><\/a> have been diagnosed with migraine headaches. But this figure likely underestimates the actual prevalence of this chronic condition. <\/span><\/p>\n

Research suggests that many of those affected by migraines do not seek medical assistance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Migraines cause symptoms such as <\/span>throbbing and pulsing<\/span><\/a>, usually on one side of the head. Additional symptoms can include extreme sensitivity to light and sound, as well as nausea and vomiting. Migraines<\/span>\u00a0tend to be more intense than traditional headaches. <\/span><\/p>\n

But that doesn’t mean all migraines are the same. Your symptoms might be very different from someone else’s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Migraines With Aura vs. Migraines Without Aura<\/b><\/h2>\n

There are two main categories of migraines: migraines with aura, formerly known as \u00ab\u00a0classical migraines\u00a0\u00bb and migraines without aura, formerly known as \u00ab\u00a0common migraines.\u00a0\u00bb <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Aura\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/a> refers to a group of symptoms that often include vision disruptions such as seeing spots, flashes, or wavy lines. Temporary\u00a0blind spots can also occur. <\/span><\/p>\n

Non-visual symptoms of aura can affect your sense of taste, touch, or smell, as well as your motor system. For instance, you might experience numbness, or a tingling sensation or weakness in arms and legs. Migraine aura usually starts before you notice any head pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ocular Migraine<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ocular (retinal) migraines are rare<\/a>\u00a0and result in\u00a0bouts of\u00a0partial or full vision loss<\/a>. Contrary to aura which occurs in both\u00a0eyes, ocular migraine occurs in just one eye. Vision loss generally\u00a0lasts for less than an hour and can happen before or during the period\u00a0of head pain. Episodes of blindness in one eye can be\u00a0symptomatic of\u00a0a serious condition, so speak to your doctor if you\u00a0experience this symptom.<\/p>\n
