Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) affects approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/reports-publications\/health-promotion-chronic-disease-prevention-canada-research-policy-practice\/vol-35-no-1-2015\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-fibromyalgia-canada-prevalence-associations-with-six-health-status-indicators.html\">1.4 percent <\/a>of Canadian adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both disorders share similar symptoms. Most experts agree that these two conditions are probably related; however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/fibromyalgia\/fibromyalgia-and-chronic-fatigue-syndrome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some believe they may actually be the same illness<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Similarities and Differences<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6859\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Similarities-CFS-Fibromyalgia-in-Canada.png\" alt=\"Similarities - CFS + Fibromyalgia in Canada\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both fibromyalgia and CFS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/fibromyalgia\/fibromyalgia-and-chronic-fatigue-syndrome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pain and fatigue are the hallmark symptoms<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain is the most prominent feature of fibromyalgia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span>In fact, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based on patient reports of tenderness or pain in at least 11 out of 18 defined spots on the body.<\/p>\n<p>Other symptoms include feeling tired and weak.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue is the predominant symptom of CFS &#8211; an overwhelming lack of energy that can be debilitating. Those diagnosed with CFS typically experience long-term fatigue, classified as a period of six months or more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20360490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Other symptoms of CFS include<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Muscle and\/or joint pain<\/li>\n<li>Swollen or tender lymph nodes<\/li>\n<li>ore throat<\/li>\n<li>Other signs of inflammation or illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/fibromyalgia\/fibromyalgia-and-chronic-fatigue-syndrome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signs and symptoms that are common to both fibromyalgia and CFS<\/a> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Difficulty sleeping<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Memory and\/or concentration impairments<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Digestive symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, or bloating<\/li>\n<li>Depression or anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who is Affected?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both CFS and fibromyalgia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/reports-publications\/health-promotion-chronic-disease-prevention-canada-research-policy-practice\/vol-35-no-1-2015\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-fibromyalgia-canada-prevalence-associations-with-six-health-status-indicators.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are more common among women than men.<\/a> Adults over the age of 40 are most likely to be affected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/fibromyalgia\/are-you-at-risk.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risk factors for fibromyalgia <\/a>include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genetics (family history of fibromyalgia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus<\/li>\n<li>physical or emotional trauma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Factors that may cause CFS include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stress<\/li>\n<li>past viral infections<\/li>\n<li>immune system problems<\/li>\n<li>hormonal imbalances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Diagnosis &amp; What to Expect at Your Appointment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6850\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagnosing-CFS-Fibromyalgia-in-Canada.png\" alt=\"Diagnosing CFS + Fibromyalgia in Canada\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making an appointment with your family doctor is the first step in addressing fibromyalgia or CFS. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor will likely ask you about your medical history and symptoms and may perform a physical examination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A physical examination can be used to identify the presence of sore or tender spots, which are often used to diagnose fibromyalgia. Pain caused by fibromyalgia is typically widespread, meaning that the pain is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/multiple-sclerosis\/multiple-sclerosis-vs-fibromyalgia#symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">present on both sides of the body<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic fatigue syndrome is more difficult to diagnose. It is identified as extreme fatigue that has lasted for six months or more, and which can&rsquo;t be explained by any underlying medical condition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fatigue tends to worsen with activity and doesn&rsquo;t improve with rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because fatigue can be a symptom of many illnesses, your doctor may conduct tests to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emedicinehealth.com\/chronic_fatigue_syndrome\/article_em.htm#what_are_the_exams_and_tests_to_diagnose_chronic_fatigue_syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rule out sleep disorders and other medical problems<\/a> that might be causing fatigue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the similarities between fibromyalgia and CFS, some of the most common therapeutic treatments are the same. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Getting enough sleep.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of both fibromyalgia and CFS include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emedicinehealth.com\/chronic_fatigue_syndrome\/article_em.htm#what_are_home_remedies_for_for_chronic_fatigue_syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disrupted sleep patterns<\/a>. Maintaining healthy sleep habits and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco can help to improve sleep quality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0010809\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBT is a therapeutic technique<\/a> that can help people who suffer from either disorder to recognize their symptoms and develop coping strategies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common coping strategies include rest, relaxation therapy, and therapies that help manage the mental effects of ongoing pain or fatigue. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatments differ between the two conditions in some key areas. For example, aerobic exercise has been found to be beneficial to people suffering from fibromyalgia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mong people with CFS, moderate exercise is recommended, since intense exercise can cause symptoms to worsen.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People suffering from CFS who have pain can be treated with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/a>, such as ibuprofen or aspirin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, these drugs are ineffective for treating pain caused by fibromyalgia.\u00a0Antidepressants have been shown to offer pain relief to people with fibromyalgia.<\/p>\n<h2><b>7 Tips for Managing Pain and Fatigue<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6849\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/CFS-Fibromyalgia-In-Canada-Pain-Management.png\" alt=\"CFS &amp; Fibromyalgia In Canada - Pain Management\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Assess symptoms on a day-to-day basis.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with fibromyalgia and CFS experience varying levels of pain and fatigue, including periods of remission. Assess your condition each morning, and try to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/fibromyalgia\/ss\/slideshow-pain-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adjust your plans accordingly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you don\u2019t sleep well, engage in less activity. When you feel well-rested and pain is tolerable, do more.<strong> Moderation is key.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Get regular exercise.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re tired or in pain, moving might be the last thing you feel like doing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/fibromyalgia\/ss\/slideshow-pain-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gular, moderate exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can contribute toward alleviating pain symptoms, reducing stress, and helping with sleep.\u00a0<\/span>Pace yourself, based on how you are feeling each day.<\/p>\n<p>We have <a href=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/exercise-chronic-pain\/\">an article dedicated to how to exercise with chronic pain for those who are unsure of what to do.<\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Use massage to treat pain.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage is a proven way to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/fibromyalgia\/ss\/slideshow-pain-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce stress and muscle pain.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0It\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be used to improve range of motion and treat depression and anxiety. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Apply heat.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat boosts blood flow and can help to relieve stiff and sore muscles. Apply a warm, moist washcloth; have a hot shower, or soak in the bathtub. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also treat deep muscle pain caused by fibromyalgia with an ice pack.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Try alternative therapies.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people find that alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, can help with fatigue and pain, but\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/fibromyalgia\/ss\/slideshow-pain-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show mixed results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out more about alternative therapies, speak to a healthcare practitioner.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b> Prioritize sleep.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both fibromyalgia and CFS can make sleep difficult. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day\u2014and avoiding naps\u2014can help. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people find that having a relaxing bedtime routine can make falling asleep easier.\u00a0<\/span>This could include taking a warm bath or reading before bedtime.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><b> Say no to excessive engagements.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning how to say no is important in minimizing stress, coping with fatigue, and dealing with pain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with CFS or fibromyalgia means accepting that you might not be able to accept every social invitation.
