The big toe is most often affected, but other joints can be affected too. A gout attack can come on suddenly, and cause a burning sensation that is extremely painful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Causes Gout?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6899\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Risks-Symptoms-Treatments-Foods-to-Avoid-for-Gout.png\" alt=\"Risks, Symptoms, Treatments,&amp; Foods to Avoid for Gout\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout isn\u2019t necessarily caused by a single factor. Uric acid is produced by the body, and it also comes from the diet.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/understanding-gout-basic-information#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many factors can lead to the build-up of uric acid<\/a> that ultimately causes gout. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight or obese<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a blood or metabolic disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a kidney and\/or thyroid problem<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain types of medication; for instance, water pills (diuretics) and immunosuppressive fungal medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking too much alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a diet high in salt, red meat, organ meat, shellfish, and\/or sweet drinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Being dehydrated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Signs and Symptoms of Gout<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/understanding-gout-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most common symptom of gout<\/a> is pain, tenderness, and swelling in the big toe. Such pain usually occurs at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people experience gout attacks in the foot, ankle, knees, or other joints. The first 36 hours are the most painful, but it may be up to 10 days before the pain goes away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes, another attack doesn\u2019t occur for months or years. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should see your doctor even if the pain from a gout attack has subsided. The uric acid in the joints can still cause harm, even if you do not experience immediate pain. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Preventing Gout<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of things you can do to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/understanding-gout-treatment#1-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prevent gout.<\/a> These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting the amount of alcohol ingested<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting salt, red meat, organ meat, shellfish, and\/or sweet drinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opting for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/weight-loss-programs-health-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing weight<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quitting smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting regular exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking enough water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might have certain medical conditions or be taking medication that increases your risk of developing gout. If so, ask your doctor what you can do to reduce the risk of a gout attack. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Medication and Treatment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have gout, your family doctor can help to treat it. In severe cases, your family doctor might refer you to a specialist called a<em> rheumatologist. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of doctor specializes in arthritis and related conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication and treatments usually depend on your medical history, current health, and the severity of symptoms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/understanding-gout-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your doctor might prescribe medications, such as these:<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colchicine, which can help reduce inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for joint inflammation and pain (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids for inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications such as allopurinol, which lowers the production of uric acid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most doctors also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/understanding-gout-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommend lifestyle changes<\/a>\u00a0that can help you prevent a future gout attack. Historically, it tended to affect only the wealthiest individuals who could afford those things. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before modern scientific research on gout, doctors understood that changing one\u2019s diet was a key part of managing the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, research has identified which foods can reduce symptoms of gout and which foods should be avoided. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purine, a chemical substance found in the body and certain foods, has been connected to gout. When purine is broken down, uric acid is produced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all foods with purines need to be avoided.
