The pelvis is the area between your hips, and the pelvic floor is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/kegel-exercises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group of muscles and tissues located at the bottom of your pelvis<\/a>. Once you learn how to identify your pelvic floor muscles, it is easy to exercise them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These muscles provide support for the bladder and bowels, as well as the uterus in women. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pelvic floor muscles are weak, it can make it harder to <a href=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/10-tips-for-controlling-an-overactive-bladder\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">control your bladder<\/a> or bowels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/incontinence\/kegel-exercises-for-urinary-incontinence.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Both men and women can benefit from Kegel exercises<\/a>. You don&rsquo;t need any equipment to do them, and you can do them anytime or anywhere without anyone knowing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to find out how to do Kegels, and how you can benefit from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Find Your Pelvic Floor Muscles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7542\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wheres-Your-Pelvic-Floor-Muscles.png\" alt=\"Where's Your Pelvic Floor Muscles\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get started on your Kegel exercises by first finding your pelvic floor muscles. To do this, the next time you go to the bathroom, try stopping yourself from urinating before you&rsquo;ve finished. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stop urinating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/kegel-exercises\">you are using your pelvic floor muscles<\/a>. You might want to try this a few times, just to get an idea of how your pelvic muscles feel when you contract them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to locate the pelvic floor muscles is to contract your muscles as though you are trying to hold in gas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women can also try inserting a clean finger into the vagina, tightening the muscles in the vaginal wall around the finger.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/kegel-exercises#for-men\">insert a finger into the rectum<\/a>, and try tightening the rectum around the finger. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to do Kegel Exercises<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you know where the pelvic floor muscles are located, you can practice clenching and unclenching them while standing, sitting, or lying down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, it might be easiest to do them lying down.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you do your Kegels, try to keep your focus on the pelvic floor muscles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might find yourself tightening other muscle groups\u2014such as the lower back, abdomen, thighs, or buttocks\u2014along with the pelvic floor muscles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you are <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000141.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tightening only the pelvic floor muscles<\/a>. Remember to inhale and exhale freely while you&rsquo;re holding your muscles clenched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, work on your technique. Try contracting your pelvic floor muscles and holding them contracted as you count to three. After three seconds, release them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do this four more times for a total of five times. Over time, slowly work up to contracting the pelvic floor muscles for a 10-second interval, and then relaxing for another 10 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You should always do your Kegel exercises with an empty bladder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Often Should You Do Kegel Exercises?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7543\" src=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-Often-Do-I-Do-Kegel-Exercises.png\" alt=\"How Often Do I Do Kegel Exercises\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to do Kegel exercises on a regular basis to start seeing the effects. You should aim to do a set of Kegels<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/kegels-should-i-do-them\"> two or three times per day<\/a>. Each set should consist of at least 10 repetitions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that it can take several weeks or several months of doing Kegels to see improvements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do Kegels anywhere. Doing them alongside another activity you do every day\u2014such as brushing your teeth, eating meals, or driving to work\u2014can make it easier to integrate them into your daily routine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should avoid doing Kegels while urinating. Although this is a good way to locate your pelvic floor muscles, doing it repeatedly can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/kegels-should-i-do-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase your risk of a urinary tract infection<\/a> (UTI) due to incomplete emptying of your bladder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, if you experience pain in your back or abdomen while doing your Kegels, you might not be doing them correctly.\u00a0<\/span>Keep in mind that the muscles in other parts of your body should remain relaxed while you perform your Kegel exercises.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to take Kegels too far. If you do too many Kegel exercises too frequently, you risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/kegel-exercises#cautions\">tiring out your muscles<\/a>. When the muscles are tired, they aren&rsquo;t able to do their job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Kegels are Important<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people spend a lot of their lives unaware of their pelvic floor muscles and their function. <strong>That&rsquo;s usually a good thing<\/strong>\u2014it means your pelvic floor muscles are working the way that they should. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, though, it&rsquo;s common for the pelvic floor muscles to weaken. A number of factors can lead to weak pelvic floor muscles. <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000141.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Some of these include<\/a>: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent coughing, sneezing, or laughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic surgery, for instance, a hysterectomy or a C-section<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal childbirth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having weak pelvic muscles can put you at risk for several medical conditions. In particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/kegels-should-i-do-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pelvic organ prolapse (POP)<\/a> is a medical condition in which the organs in your pelvis start to sag.\u00a0<\/span>This condition mainly affects women, and is associated with incontinence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/kegels-should-i-do-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Other medical conditions<\/a> related to weak pelvic muscles include: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Stress incontinence. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress incontinence occurs when you leak a few drops or even a stream of urine while coughing, sneezing, laughing, or while moving or lifting. <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/joinastudy.ca\/what-is-urge-incontinence\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Urge incontinence<\/a>.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urge incontinence occurs when involuntary muscle contractions in the bladder lead to the release of urine. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fecal incontinence.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fecal incontinence occurs when stool is released from the rectum unintentionally. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Kegel exercises might not cure these conditions, they are helpful.
