Endometriosis is the most common of gynecologic disorders, with 2 – 10% of women of reproductive age estimated to have the condition. Women with endometriosis report more painful periods, non-menstrual pelvic pain, and pain during sexual intercourse as compared to women without endometriosis. Symptoms may be minimal in some women, but debilitating in others.
The condition is lifelong, requiring management through medications and in more severe cases, surgery. Research is ongoing into medications that will safely treat the pain associated with endometriosis and provide an alternative to surgery.
