Clinical studies enrolling across Canada
Every study here is running at a physician-led research site in Ontario, Quebec or British Columbia, has been authorised by Health Canada, and has been reviewed by an independent research ethics board before opening. Taking part is free, you do not need a referral, and being screened does not commit you to anything.
Common questions about joining a study in Canada
Do you get paid to take part in a clinical study in Canada?
Study visits and study-related assessments are provided at no cost to you, and many studies reimburse reasonable travel and parking costs. Some also offer a set payment per completed visit as compensation for your time. The amount differs from study to study, so the research site confirms it in writing before you consent to anything.
Are clinical studies safe?
No study can be described as risk-free, and the known risks are set out for you in plain language before you agree to take part. Every study listed here is authorised by Health Canada, reviewed by an independent research ethics board, and run under ICH Good Clinical Practice by a physician investigator. You are monitored more closely than in routine care.
Do I need a referral from my family doctor?
No. You can contact a research site directly, or answer the matching questions and let the team come back to you. With your permission the research team will keep your family doctor informed, which most people prefer.
Will I be given a placebo?
Some studies compare an investigational medicine against a placebo, and where that is the case it is stated before you consent. In many studies the treatment you already take continues alongside the study medicine rather than being stopped, and the consent discussion covers exactly what would happen in your case.
What happens to the information I submit?
It goes to the research team at the site you contacted so they can talk to you about studies. It is handled under PIPEDA and the applicable provincial health-privacy law, it is not sold, and you can ask to be removed from the list at any time.
Can I leave a study after I have joined?
Yes. Consent is not a contract. You can stop at any point, for any reason or none, and it does not affect the care you get from your own doctor.
